Dr. Yamamoto has been funded by the NIH continuously for the past 29 years as a PI on research related to the neurotoxic and neurochemical effects of methamphetamine and MDMA. He has published over 140 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 115 of which are original articles related specifically to the excitotoxic, metabolic, and oxidative effects of methamphetamine and MDMA. The lab uses a variety of immunological, histochemical, enzymatic, and pharmacological methods in both cell and animal-based models. The laboratory was the first to show that the neurotoxic effects of methamphetamine are mediated by glutamate, excitotoxicity, and the impairment of mitochondrial function. He has also demonstrated that the peripheral inflammatory effects of Meth mediate its neurotoxicity independent of the direction action of methamphetamine on the brain. Dr. Yamamoto has trained 22 graduate students and 16 postdoctoral fellows. Six graduate students and 5 postdoctoral fellows have received NIH NRSA awards to support their training under his direction.
